Reflection about "Girl" by Jamaica Kincard

This story gives us a clear example of how girls or young women were educated at home in poor countries. Throughout the story you can read how a mother, in a mandatory tone, tells her daughter the ways or things she should do throughout her life to be a woman and not a slut. The orders are so strict that she tells her daughter with whom she can talk and with whom she cannot talk. In addition, it can be observed that the mandatory power that the mother has limits her daughter to only being able to speak twice during the story. The most shocking of all is that she does not take into consideration what her daughter wants or says.

I thought that this story is very sad because of the situation that this young woman lives and I think that this is due to the ancient cultures that still exist in the world. Cultures where parents raise their children strictly, where children live oppressed without being able to make their own decisions and living their lives the way their parents want or choose. However, girls are the most affected in these strict or sexist cultures. The parents raise their daughters so that in the future they will be good mothers, good wives and be utilizes in things of the home. Limiting that they can choose their own decisions on how to live their life.

I think that current societies are not governed in this way, but past societies believed and lived with that style of education. On the other hand, countries such as India or China are countries that currently have quite strict and conservative cultures and ideologies. It is a pity that the girl in history did not have the opportunity to live in a world like today, where diversity is a right in many countries of the world. I pity that there are still societies where women have to be in a way simply because the family or society imposes it.
